Painting video diary III: Who is in control? Went back and did a second pouring - the the figures in the large painting did not have enough texture on their skin. I also poured some brighter colors on their hair and also on the sunset and flowers on the girl on the chair. Pouring where I might have previously started blocking with a brush to keep in line with my objective to keep these loose.

Painting video diary VIII. I really like the results of the first painting, but that said, I do not think I have arrived where I wanted to be with this series of four paintings I am documenting. My original goal to be looser has been achieved, but I think I miss-set my goal. My revised aim is to maintain some of the rawness of the underpainting while still completing what feels like a finished work.

VIDEO DIARY IV

Painting video diary IV: When to stop? It is a pattern: I want to keep painting but I am tired. The natural light is gone, and my studio lighting isn't cutting it... But I keep painting, every time. Only the morning sun can acquit or condemn my late night actions.

VIDEO DIARY V

Painting video diary V: This is the love hate phase filled with celebratory moments quickly stifled by self doubt. I think I am close. Still not done are hands, some shading on the legs and a little work on the flowers in the background, plus ongoing finessing (until I take it away from myself.) When I look at her face through the viewfinder she looks more harsh. In person, every angle and location changes her, in part due to the texture and metallic underpainting.

Painting video diary VI: Why painting is a pain. Eight hours ago I just had to do the finishing touches to the hands and background... At one point I had to kick Todd out of the studio because he was having a freakout that I was getting too tight. I had to put on my grown-up voice and say, "What are you doing in here?!" After he left I freaked out and wiped off the background and started over. Will I like it in the morning? That is always the question.

VIDEO DIARY VII

Painting video diary VII: Have fun? Gosh, I hope it's done. I will know in a couple days when it stops pulling my eye to areas that need tweaking. Did I meet my objective to be looser? Yes... and no. Maybe 'looser' isn't the right word now. Maybe 'raw' is better. I will focus on the remaining small painting next to see how it can still evolve before taking on the two larger canvases.

Painting video diary II: Why multiple paintings? Continued blocking out figure with Buff Titanium and Potter's Pink glazing. (Found an unopened bottle of glazing medium on my shelf and thought I world try it.) Started on hair and drapes on small painting.

VIDEO DIARY III
Painting video diary III: Who is in control? Went back and did a second pouring - the the figures in the large painting did not have enough texture on their skin. I also poured some brighter colors on their hair and also on the sunset and flowers on the girl on the chair. Music Video in Production!

First scene for the new music video successfully shot August 5, 2013. Director of Photography, T Collins Logan; Production Assistant/Second Camera, Coleen Grant; Special Thanks/Location, Scripps Research Facility.

The new camera, new wig, new make-up, all fell into place after a few small struggles. Todd's camera work is beautiful and dramatic. He has a natural eye.
